Young achievers recognised

Local dancer Laura Panagopoulos will be heading off to international dance festivals in Portugal then Romania after being awarded a Young Achiever Scheme (YAS) at the June council meeting.

The scheme is aimed at assisting young people in their pursuits to participate at a state or national level for activities, events or competitions.

Laura has been dancing with the O’Shea Ryan Academy of Irish Dance since she was seven.

She has danced at International Folk Festivals in Greece, Spain and Borneo and a Military Tattoo in Malta as well as at annual events such as the Beechworth Celtic Festival, Yackandandah Folk Festival, Children’s Fair and St Patrick’s Day, and has travelled to other locations in Victoria such as Mildura and Koroit.

Congratulations to local basketballer Casey Ardern who also received a YAS award for her achievements in basketball.

At age 15, Casey was named most valuable under 16 player in 2015-2016 by the Wodonga Basketball Association.

In 2016 she was a member of the Basketball Victoria country under 16 state squad.

She is also a member of Basketball Victoria country national intensive training program (NTP) 2016-17, Wodonga Wolves Women’s Country Basketball League team 2016, Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup Victorian Bushrangers team, Basketball Victoria Country under 16 state squad 2017, and Albury Wodonga Lady Bandits 2017.

She was selected for the New Zealand tour with the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup under 16 team, thanks to this award.

A third YAS award went to the Wodonga Wolves Under 12s basketball team including Jack Mathey, Frank Oguche, Fraser Jensen, Coen Ainsworth, Zac Harding, Reuben Bourke, Caleb Wharepapa, Harry Stripeikis and Mitch Hack.

The team won the Division One Grand Final of every tournament entered for the season, including the Basketball Victoria Country Championships. The team is also the first Wodonga Junior Basketball team in any age group to be invited to the National Classic.
