Council to explore options for aquatics facilities management

Wodonga Council has notified YMCA of its intention to put out an expressions of interest for the running of the city’s aquatics facilities ahead of the expiry of the contract next year.

The partnership between the council and the YMCA has been in place since 2008 with the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre and as the inaugural contractor when WAVES opened in 2013.

Chief Executive Officer Patience Harrington said the contract with the YMCA, one of the council’s larger contracts, was due to expire in June 2018.

“The council continues to have a strong, positive relationship with the YMCA and local management in the running of very popular recreational facilities and it will be business as usual for the next 12 months as the group delivers a vital service to meet our community’s health and wellbeing needs,” Ms Harrington said.

“In the past decade there had been many changes in the leisure industry in the way centres were governed, managed and operated.

“The council is taking the opportunity to test the market to ensure our community are continuing to get best value for money as well as exploring potential different models for recreation facilities.”

Ms Harrington said the centre had a loyal and consistent following with many user groups using the centre as a base for their activities.

“As a key recreational precinct in our city, the council recently completed the master planning of this site to guide our investment in the site.

“Our users told us they wanted a modern and accessible facility that would cater for the community’s needs now and into future.

“The council has recently invested in the site with an upgrade of the pool deck, acoustic panelling in the group fitness room, repairing guttering throughout the site as well as a planned refurbishment of the change rooms and further equipment rooms.

“Our community will continue to enjoy a premier indoor sporting and aquatic facility and its programs.”

The council will begin the procurement process later this year with a view to awarding a new contract early next year.
