Council launches new app to keep community informed

Wodonga Council has launched a new app to keep residents and visitors up-to-date as the next stage of the city’s transformation gets under way.

The new app – WotsOn Wodonga – includes roadworks updates, an events calendar and parking maps for the CBD.

It also allows residents to put in their address to find out which bin goes out each week.

Local businesses are able to share offers and promotions through a special section of the app and location services allow residents and visitors to find the nearest parking, promotions and activities when they are in the city.

Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the app was a timely initiative for the city as it undergoes the final stages of the city heart revitalisation.

“We’ve seen some exciting changes – particularly in the past few years – in our city centre which is becoming what our community wanted, a vibrant city heart,” Cr Speedie said.

“The national data tells us 86 per cent of people own a smartphone and developing an app for our community allows us to share more information with more people.

“As a council, we are moving with the times and the app will be a vital and useful tool for our community, residents and visitors alike, to keep them informed about what’s happening in their city, not only for roadworks but also for entertainment and businesses.

“I encourage everyone with a smartphone to download the app and stay up-to-date with the exciting changes in our city and I urge businesses to take advantage of the offers and promotions tool.”

The app complements the City Heart website (cityheart.wodonga.vic.gov.au) which was launched in June and features listings of local retailers as well as works information.

The app’s development is part of the four-year program of works being undertaken in the city centre with funding from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions fund.

Developed by local company Dutch Media and WebMatrix, the app is available now for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play or go to wotson.wodonga.vic.gov.au

The reconstruction of South St will begin from the start of September.

A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of South and Church streets to address safety concerns and traffic flow through this area and is in line with feedback from the community in 2015.

The final design will see South St remain single lane in both directions with the centre median parking to remain in South St between Smythe and Church streets.

The works will also include landscaping, beautification and new street lighting, the undergrounding of overhead cables.
