Aged activity centre

The Willows, located at 11b McFarland Rd (Pearce St end) (view map), is an architect designed facility housing Home and Community Care (HACC) services, Meals On Wheels, Planned Activity Group (PAG), Friendly Visiting Service, dementia support and aged care administration under the management of Westmont Aged Care Services Ltd.

The Willows shares a site with McFarland House, a residential respite facility operated by Uniting Care.

The building is beautiful and was designed by wmcq architects to fit in with its surroundings on the edge of Willow Park.

It was opened in March, 2007 to bring together three programs (that were formerly housed in three separate buildings - frail, dementia and aged care administration) to support integration of services.

The building has many sustainable features, which have resulted in long-term energy and water savings.

These include:

Deep roof eaves prevent excessive solar gain so that there is no direct sun on the north-facing glass for the hottest four months of the year, yet good solar gain for the coolest;
The care areas are evaporatively-cooled; only the office area is air-conditioned;
Auto-operated glazed louvres in each high-level gable provide natural cross-ventilation;
Heating, cooling, natural cross-ventilation, ceiling fan and neutral modes are controlled by the users from simple wall switch points. Neither active heating or cooling should be necessary for long spring and autumn periods;
The entire building is double-glazed; and
Rainwater is harvested from the full roof area for recycling to the toilets, Laundry and garden via Bluescope corrugated tanks.
