Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between an off-leash area and a dog park?
A dog park usually consists of a gated area wherein dogs are permitted to roam off-leash, without a perceived direct voice command or control by the owner. However, there is an expectation that owners will continue to have control of their dog and that if a dog is creating issues, then it is removed from the area.
An off-leash area usually consists of an unfenced reserve, often natural bushland, the sides of walking tracks or designated public parks.
Why Willow Park?
Of the feedback received in 2020 regarding dogs in open spaces, it was identified that the community would like to see a larger gated dog park closer to West Wodonga. The space selected is already a designated off-leash area, which is used frequently by dog owners.
It also had existing elements that made it a suitable site including its size, location in relation to the existing dog park at Belvoir Park, access supporting amenities, existing shade and parking opportunities.
Although Willow Park is a busy reserve with sport and leisure activities and general public use, the area selected is located in an underused section of the park and will have little to no impact on the other users of the main park areas.
What is the size of the new park?
The size of the proposed dog park is 9512m2. The existing established dog park at Belvoir is 2650m2. This allows plenty of space for owners and their dogs of all sizes to spread out and play.
Is parking available?
Yes – street parking is available on the park side of McFarland Road. Parking is also available in the main car park off Pearce St, just a short stroll along the path to the park.
Are there toilets nearby?
Public Toilets are located near the main Willow Park car park. Dogs will need to be restrained when using these facilities and other park amenities.
Will there be lighting?
No. The park is not designed for night time use and therefore there will be no lighting to the dog park.
How will noise be controlled?
The park fence line will have a minimum 10m buffer between the boundary of the dog park and existing property boundaries, shared paths and sports fields. The large and established trees within in and around the proposed park will help to create a natural noise buffer. The park is not designed for night use and the hours of use will be promoted through council website and regular information channels.
