May 2020 update

Earlier in the year we sought the community’s thoughts on the playground plan for stage 14 of the Riverside Estate.

While we couldn't incorporate all the ideas, we've listened to your feedback and modified the design with the following changes

  • More play elements have been added for all ages including a multipurpose play unit including climbing areas, slide and swaying elements; a carousel spinner suitable for four years and up that allows children to lie, sit or stand; and, swing set including two single swing seats – one with a baby seat – and a nest swing seat.
  • More amenities were requested and a shelter with picnic table as well as additional picnic table and seating, shade sail and a water bubble with bottle refill have been incorporated.
  • In response to feedback for an informal space to play and kick a ball, an irrigated grass area has been introduced into the updated plan.
  • The combination ball unit has been removed amid concerns over user conflict and replaced with a standard basketball ring to complement the introduced informal green space.
  • Feedback on the inclusion of the basketball half court was mixed but the majority of the feedback was in support of the inclusion. The council has received ongoing feedback requesting a basketball court be installed at a site in the estate. This site is the most suitable for a court in the open space land allocated in the estate. Signage will be installed to indicate suitable hours of use
  • Feedback suggested the skate elements did not fit with the overall design. With the additional play and community elements and for the safety of all users, the decision was made to remove them.
  • Requests were made for barbecues and toilets at the site. The council’s Playground Strategy classifies this site as a local park and these amenities are not generally provided at this level.

Next steps

Work will begin on the playground in the spring with delays in delivering of equipment being experienced. The council is continuing with its capital works investment across the city as one way to drive economic stimulus through our local area through the construction and trades sector.

Look out for signage at the site which will signal works are about to begin.

Please note the images on this page reflect the updated plan following community feedback. The original plan can be found in the document library.

Wodonga Council is committed to providing high quality play spaces in our city. Before any major changes are made to these play spaces, we want your feedback on how the playgrounds are used.

As part of Stage 14 of the Riverside Estate development, the council is proposing to install a multisport half-court with basketball ring, chin bar, skate and scooter elements and seating on the open space between Fydler St and Coutts Lane.

A copy of the plan can be found in the document library and the images above. The council would like your feedback on the draft plan.

The council is also looking to install community garden beds in the open space on Perkins Street, and has opened an expression of interest for the maintenance and upkeep of those beds.

To express your interest for the community garden, please visit the consultation at https://wod.city/MWY_RiversideGardenEOI
