Professional development for councillors is a component of good governance. It is important that councillors are supported with developing an appropriate skill-set and that they have a sound knowledge of issues affecting the local government sector.

The Councillor Professional Development Policy (formerly Councillor Development Policy) provides a framework for offering professional development to councillors. It addresses the funding, approving, monitoring and accounting of training undertaken by councillors.
