The council is proposing to install a gated dog park at the southern end of Willow Park next to McFarland Rd.
In 2019, we were Talking Cats and Dogs where community feedback included requests for a secondary dog park and off-leash areas.
Last year, we were just Talking Dogs. Following this feedback, the rules around dogs in public areas changed and, apart from in designated off-leash areas, dogs must be on a lead when in public areas. The feedback also included more comments in support of a larger off-leash dog park and the need for more gated areas.
In October last year, the council introduced 15 off-leash areas and these have been assessed for suitability of a new gated dog park. Community feedback indicated the need for a dog park in West Wodonga and a site off Willow Park has been nominated as the proposed site.
This space will provide dog owners an opportunity to enhance the health and wellbeing of their dogs without it impacting on others in the community.
The proposed site is significantly larger than the gated dog park at Belvoir Park, is close to public amenities, and already has established car parking along McFarland Road. This location is supported by additional parking at Willow Park and is well connected to many of Wodonga shared path networks.
The dog park will include the following.
- Two separate dog access gates, one at either end of the park
- Water bubblers with dog bowls at each entry point
- Fully secure chain wire mesh fence around the perimeter
- A 10m buffer zone from surrounding houses, paths and sports fields.
- Seating throughout the site
- Dog agility and play equipment
- Dog waste disposal bags and bins
