Safety boost for Wodonga’s hilltop reserves

23 Dec, 2020

One of the positive things to come out of COVID 19 restrictions has been an increase in people taking to Wodonga’s fabulous hills and reserves for physical and mental health.

Hikers, cyclists, dog-walkers and even the ‘outdoors-curious’ have been out in increased numbers to enjoy the fresh air and panoramic views across our regional cities.

Visitors from Albury and as far south as Wangaratta who have been unaware of the hills to date have also enjoyed the relatively new experience

Along with increased usage, comes an increased risk of exposure to musculoskeletal injuries from trips, falls through to snakebites.

To better respond to all the locations in our hilltop reserves Ambulance Victoria has been working closely with Wodonga Council to install a simple numbering system attached to gates and posts should people need to call 000 for help.

Ambulance Victoria Team Manager, Mike Fuery, said the signage will help AV paramedics, in collaboration with SES crews, to locate and treat patients faster.

"We think this system of signage will be really helpful should someone need our help", said Wodonga Team Manager, Mike Fuery.

"After calling 000 all people will need to tell our call takers is which number gate or post they are near and the name of the hill they are on."

The current location with signage is Klings Hill, with plans for expansion into Federation Hill and Huon Hill.

"We want people to know that we will find you if you are in trouble. Sit tight, stay calm and we won't be far away," Mr. Fuery said.
