Hello Hyphen.

The new library gallery was officially opened in Wodonga on August 2, 2021.

Hyphen features three main galleries – Artspace Gallery, Playspace Gallery and Community Gallery – as well as the Hallway Gallery. It hosts the full library service and features three meeting rooms; the Community Studio overlooking the courtyard suitable for workshops, meetings and presentations; the Creative Studio for resident artists; Tech Studio and Sound Studio; and, a Sculpture Terrace.

The $10.2 million project will see the redevelopment of the Wodonga Library and Arts Space Wodonga.

The two-storey building features an upgraded library space, two gallery rooms as well as community meeting and workshop rooms.

A significant design feature is the spiral staircase topped by a skylight which will intersect the second-floor gallery spaces. The design includes a courtyard to link with the existing courtyard and a second-floor terrace. The large tree that is a significant feature in The Cube Wodonga courtyard is planned to remain.

Works continue on the detailed designs and final floor plans. Construction is due to begin second-half of the year.

The library will operate from an alternate site during the build while the gallery will explore outreach programs and alternative spaces. Negotiations continue for a temporary location for the library during the build with officers talking to agents of several sites in the CBD

Early October, 2018, it was announced that the Victorian Government was funding $4 million of the $10.2 million project.

The temporary library is located at 194 High St, Wodonga.

Name of library gallery revealed

The new Wodonga library-gallery will be named Hyphen.
The name, which was developed through an internal process and taken from a wide pool of options, reflects the connection between the building’s twin purposes, the two cities and the building’s amazing architecture.
Trusses being stalled
August 10, 2020

Steel beams, rafters and trusses that make up the entrance and cantilever were delivered and installed after being manufactured off-site.
Footings being installed
April 1, 2020

Development are under way with contractors excavating the area for the internal and external footings as well as the lift pits. Inground stormwater pits, the inground sewer and the pipework have also been completed.
Construction has commenced
February 27, 2020

The build has started.
Demolition works have started
December 16, 2020

The old site has started to be demolished to make way for the build, starting February, 2020.
Library gallery construction tender awarded
December 10, 2019

Zauner Construction will build the new Wodonga library gallery after winning the tender at the December council meeting. Read more here.
